Crowning Beginning
It started long before Zona Rosa was built. During a tour of the sprawling farmland that we now call Zona Rosa, the developer learned about these mysterious oversized crowns that hung above the streets of downtown Kansas City near the popular shopping district from the 1950s through the early 1980s. He knew if they were able to bring the memorable crowns back to Kansas City that this would be a significant way to immediately demonstrate that Zona Rosa was a strong community partner who was here to stay.
And so it began with the crowns. For its first holiday season, Zona Rosa restored the local tradition of using crowns as holiday decorating centerpieces just as had been done in Kansas City for over 30 years. The local tradition of the crown is more than just lighted holiday décor. Of course, Kansas City has Hallmark Cards, a longtime hometown company with a crown for its logo as well as the city’s baseball team, the Kansas City Royals who have a crown for many of its insignias and ballpark decorations. Crowns have a wonderful history in Kansas City.
That first holiday season, three large crowns were built, and two have been constructed since, with more to come as the seasons progress. Zona Rosa contracted with the same company that built the original crowns for downtown to recreate and re-build the 17-foot-wide, 2,000-pound crowns to be hung 30 feet in the air along the roadways of Zona Rosa. Original designs and blueprints were used to rebuild the stunning new crowns. The company, Manneco, a family-owned and operated decorating company from Independence, Mo., is owned by Hoot Mann who has fond memories of building and installing the original crowns in the early 1960s with his father.
